About Hogwash

HOGWASH SOAP is a small one woman business based in Great Torrington, North Devon.

I am Christine, that very woman, and that is me there with my crazy dog Dora!

I have been making cold processed natural soap since 2008, firstly as a Maker at The Soap Kitchen and then founder of Hogwash Soap.

I know it’s a cliché and almost obligatory for a soap maker to have eczema but I did develop it at the tender age of ten, when back in the day it was called dermatitis. I was unfortunate enough, however, to be misdiagnosed by an eccentric GP, who brought her small dog to work every day, and sat it on her desk. She asked me if I’d stroked any cows, disbelieved me when I assured her I  hadn’t, and prescribed a potion for ringworm that stripped the top layer of my skin off…well it was the 1970s!   Unlike ringworm, there is no medical cure for eczema, but I now know that with gentle soap and regular moisturising, the skin has a fighting chance to heal itself.

I have developed the whole HOGWASH range because it works for me, and I wanted a luxury product that didn’t break the bank and that smelled gorgeous.

There is a liquid soap, WASH for body, hands and for foamy bath time (without SLS).

A MOISTURE CREAM for hands, face and body, which is soothing and calming.

The SOAP is made with just three oils, Shea butter, olive oil, and coconut oil, plus the essential oils for their properties and fragrance.  I add no colour because three oils are enough for a sensitive skin.

The more time and care you put into making soap, the better the bar. When it is ready I pour into moulds where it’s left to cure (dry) for at least 4 weeks before I cut, stamp and wrap it in FAIRTRADE handmade paper. Hogwash Soap’s high oil content means that it works to protect the skin, not strip it of its natural oils. Most commercial soap has its oils extracted, making it harder and harsher, also cheaper. Making good quality soap is an art and you will notice the difference.

We supply various B&Bs and holiday accommodation and the feedback we get from guests is fantastic and we know generates sales once they’ve used it.
